ARTIST STATEMENT Julie North is a student currently studying fine art at the University of East London.  Working with a variety of media she has recently been developing and combining urban scenes from personal photographs using oil paints and print making by selecting various images, manipulating them and layering them to create depth.

‘Rotten Oasis’ highlights contradictions between the urban landscape that society desires and the mechanisms needed for this ‘ideal environment’.  The need for electricity, sewerage systems and communication is a powering force; but affluence creates effluence.  The work aims to signify this space and contradiction. Through the transparency of Perspex, the silkscreen processes and the way the work is created, the viewer can see every aspect of the work’s construction; everything is declared.
